How to Rank High in All Search Engines

How to Build Backlinks

Posted by Bragadocchio from the cre8asite forums.

There are a lot of strategies that you could follow for building links to your site. Here are a few:

  1. Have something interesting, unique, humorous, or engaging, or a mix of all of those, on your pages.
  2. Offer a tool or application on your pages that people will link to.
  3. Look for regional or topical directories that look like people use them, and that may bring your site traffic in spite of search engines.
  4. Provide some way for people to interact with your site, either through a forum, or blog with comments, or a wiki, or reviews, or some other way that builds community, and makes people feel like they have some investment in the site.
  5. Work to make your site appear to the the authority on a subject to people who might be interested in what you have to offer.
  6. If you offer goods for sale, have a unique selling proposition for your site that makes it stand out from others within the same niche.
  7. Write about controversial topics that people might be interested in.
  8. Combine your online efforts at attracting attention with an offline marketing plan that make people aware of your site, and lead people to it.
  9. Sponsor something positive online, like a nonprofit event, or a contest that benefits people, or community efforts that helps people. Don't worry about links - worry about building positive relationships with people. Then do it again. Then again.
  10. Build positive business relationships with people who run sites that complement yours. Examples: A financial services company might know a lawyer who can help their clients, and refers people to those clients. The lawyer in turn sends people to the financial services company. They may send links back and forth to each other, or they may not. But the relationship is better than links. A slightly different example: a craft shop that specializes in pottery refers people who are interested in glassware to another shop that specializes in glassware. And the glassblower refers people interested in pottery back to the potter.
